Instant Gratification Quick Takes: August 12, 2011

Highlighting odd and off-beat new releases to watch instantly on Netflix

New for August 12, 2011

Scrubbers (1983), directed by Mai Zetterling, with Amanda York, Chrissie Cotterill, Elizabeth Edmonds, Kate Ingram and Amanda Symonds – Two girls escape from an all-female juvenile prison for different reasons – the first, Annetta, wants to visit her baby daughter; the second, Carol, plans to attempt to try and get recaptured and sent to another borstal (juvenile detention center) where her girlfriend is being held. The plan, of course, goes awry. Both girls are recaptured and sent to the facility where Carol’s girlfriend is imprisoned, however, Carol finds out that her girlfriend, Doreen, has a new girlfriend. Meanwhile, Annetta blames Carol for turning her over to police and plans her revenge. Written by the same team responsible for Alan Clarke’s juvenile prison flick, Scum, Scrubbers (a British colloquialism used to describe lower-class girls of questionable morals) has a lot going for it: prison, lesbians, revenge. If anything else, it’s Scum with chicks – and that’s a premise I heartily endorse. (Available until August 12, 2012) [Links: IMDb, Trailer]
